Aircraft General Knowledge PPL study guide — systems and engines

July 5, 2026

Aircraft General Knowledge covers how the aircraft is built and how its systems work. It is broad — engines, airframes, instruments, electrics, and fuel — but each area follows logical principles.

Main areas

  • Piston engine operation and instruments
  • Airframe construction and controls
  • Electrical and vacuum systems
  • Fuel systems and carburettor icing
  • Flight instruments and errors

How to study

Build mental models of how systems connect. For example, understand the full fuel path from tank to carburettor, and what happens when a component fails.

Exam focus

Questions often describe a symptom and ask for the cause or the correct pilot action. Link each system to its failure modes and the cockpit indication you would see.
