Principles of Flight PPL study guide — aerodynamics essentials

July 8, 2026

Principles of Flight explains why aircraft fly and how controls affect their behaviour. It is conceptual rather than calculation-heavy, but the ideas build on each other — start with the four forces.

Foundation concepts

  • The four forces: lift, weight, thrust, drag
  • Angle of attack and the stall
  • Primary and secondary flight controls
  • Stability and centre of gravity
  • Ground effect and induced drag

How to study

Draw force diagrams as you read. Understanding why lift decreases after the stall is more useful than memorising a number without context.

Common exam topics

Expect questions on what happens when you change power, flap setting, or centre of gravity. Trace the chain of cause and effect for each scenario.
