Human Performance PPL study guide — physiology and decision-making

Human Performance and Limitations tests how well you understand the pilot — not the aircraft. It covers physiology, psychology, and the factors that affect your ability to fly safely.

On the ULC exam, a definition alone rarely wins the mark. More often you get symptoms or a time limit and must name the cause or the correct pre-flight decision.

What Human Performance actually tests

The subject links altitude physiology, the senses, stress, and fitness-to-fly rules. The goal is to recognise when you or a passenger become the weakest link in flight safety.

  • Hypoxia, hyperventilation, and carbon monoxide
  • Vision, illusions, and spatial disorientation

Hypoxia versus hyperventilation

Both can cause dizziness and tingling, but the mechanism and first action differ. Drill symptom → cause → action chains (oxygen / breathing rate / descent) instead of memorising word lists in isolation.

Vision, illusions, and spatial disorientation

Questions favour night scenarios, flight without a horizon, or VMC into IMC. Learn which illusions come from the vestibular system versus vision — and why instruments beat “feel”.

Fitness limits: alcohol, blood, and diving

Precision on numbers and no-fly periods matters here. Use flashcards for alcohol, blood donation, and diving limits, then run a scenario quiz so the number is not floating without context.
