Meteorology PPL study guide — weather theory for pilots

Meteorology is one of the larger PPL(A) subjects. It connects theory to every go/no-go decision you will make as a pilot.

Focus on cause-and-effect chains: which pressure system or front produces which visibility, cloud type, and VFR risk.

Why Meteorology drives go/no-go decisions

The exam checks whether you can turn a weather picture into a flight decision — not only name a cloud. Train the habit of asking what it means for visibility, icing, and turbulence.

Fronts, visibility, and flight decisions

A warm front often brings poor visibility and layered cloud; a cold front more convective weather and sharper hazards. For each front type, ask what can go wrong on departure, en route, and approach.

Building a METAR and TAF decoding habit

Decode one METAR and one TAF aloud each day until wind, visibility, cloud, and weather groups feel automatic. Then pair decoding with “is this VFR flight still sensible?”.

Icing, turbulence, and thunderstorm risk

Separate the conditions that favour icing, mountain wave, and thunderstorms. Questions often describe terrain or a flight phase and ask for the most likely hazard or correct response.
